Two
people were killed last night in a plane crash at the Centerville Airport. The men have been identified as Dr. Richard
Sabatini, who was piloting the plane and his wife Lydia.
Jeff
Belden of the local Federal Aviation Administration field office says that the
plane that crashed “was a single-engine plane.” The exact type of plane is the
Cessna 172 Skyhawk. The Skyhawk was first flown in 1955 and became the most
successful mass produced light weight aircraft.
Sabatini
and his wife were going to the exclusive Fontainebleau resort in the north part
of the state for a skiing holiday, which is why they were taking the plane, Lt.
Feldman says. As they were taking off they crashed into a field adjacent to the
runway.
According
to the control tower Sabatini was able to get the plane off the ground, but
quickly realized he was having trouble controlling the aircraft. It is believed
that the loss of control could be due to the foul weather that was occurring
during the take off. The foul weather
included sleet and a strong, driving wind.
